By randomly picking syllables you can construct fairly plausible
names. Once when I had a lot of spare time, I toyed with a game where
I picked names for my characters by omitting various parts of the
alphabet for the various races. For example, if I remember right,
gnomes had only round vowels and no liquids, elves had only front
vowels and no stops, trolls had only one vowel: o. It was fun and
gave each a distinct flavour. I sometimes long for that phase of very
much spare time to come back, but with more money...
