As an L2 speaker, I usually try to use the least controversial
construction. :-) So please don't fight each other if there is no
agreement, it was not intended to cause any conflicts... %-]
Oh, and before trying to use the least controversial construction, I
try to use the most British one. Which is hard, because I talked to
many more Americans. :-)
