I'd've thought you'd offend a lot of people by
pronouncing _sceptic_ as if it were _septic_
(as in, tank).

In Australia, <sceptic> is the normal spelling.
Despite this, we have The Australian Skeptics [1]).
Another example of the same phenomena is that we
spell <labour> the English way yet we have the
Australian Labor Party.
