I don't know if this will help at all, but in my
dialect, as is true I believe in most Canadian
english, [O] only appears before [r\], in words like
"core" and "four". It sounds more like [o] to me than
like anything else. I think (but I'm not certain)
that [A] is the vowel I have in words like "father"
and "caught"/"cot" (which I pronounce the same).
