I recall the book _Other Senses, Other Worlds_ has a chapter on
octopuses as sentient lifeforms. They concluded the only reason why
octopuses haven't developed as a sentient species is because they have
short lifespans.
Someone else will have to remember the book details, because I can't
think of them offhand. I'm sure it's been mentioned before.
