My suggestion of where to start might be Basic English by Charles Kay
Ogden. This was English stripped down to (IIRC) 800 words, and it was
perfectly servicable, if requiring a certain circumloqutary aptitude. The
original works are out of print, but there's very probably a wealth of
information both pro and con to be found on the WWW.
On a similar tangent, this list once collaboratively made a moderately
functional language with only 20 lexes. I say "moderately", of course,
because while it had an almost complete set of "syntactic glue" words, the
"semantic content" words were rather thin on the ground. It worked within
its own domain, and quite nicely IIRC. It's certainly in the archives, but
I have no idea what useful search terms would be.
One or two among our number probably know the official wordcount of Lojban
(a conlan that is almost the defining standard for logical languages in
some eyes), or could readily find out.

PS: You might find some resistence to talk of logical languages in these
parts, due to The Great Schism, but don't let it put you off from looking
for answers.
