Unicode in "plain text"

Need help.
My browser -- Internet Explorer -- will allow me to select any font I like
for webpages, but the font selection window only allows a choice of three
for what it calls "plain text". And since all the mails on this list are
encoded as "plain text", I can't see a lot of the special characters. How
do I get it to allow me to choose one of my unicode fonts for "plain text"
so I can see all the characters in an email?
