It's remarkably easy.

The chances are you already have all the computer hardware you need. You
can pick up an acceptably good microphone for less than $10 from Staples,
Circuit City, Best Buy, or one of the others, or spend a few more dollars
at Radio Shack or a musicians store and get something that's going to give
you a clearer recording. It plugs into the little hole marked with a
picture of a microphone.

Then, get Audacity from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ and LAME from
http://lame.sourceforge.net/ and you're good to go. The controls in
Audacity are as simple as a tape recorder or CD player, though there are
plenty of other options lurking in the menus if and when you decide to
tinker.
