For that matter, the games' stories have nothing to do with each other at all
either. The Final Fantasy games are really only sequels to each other in the
sense that "Windows 98" is a sequel to "Windows 95".
However the story of the movie was similar to FFVII, with the meteor and the
Gaiaism.
(And the story was basically: A meteor or whatever crashed into earth with a
cargo of invisible energy creatures called "Phantoms" that can remove a
creature's soul from its body [i.e., kill it]. Mankind, of course, wants to
annihilate them in self-defense. The General ["Hein"] wants to accomplish this
through brute force with a giant cannon being built in orbit. [However direct
attack has never been effective before.] The Doctor ["Sid", but we all know it
should be 'Cid'] wants to "construct a spirit wave" by combining the "waveforms"
of several different creatures to create a wave that would "cancel out" the
waveform of the Phantoms. The General [and the rest of the world] considers the
doctor's plan touchy-feely pseudo-science nonsense, although Sid has had
preliminary success already. The Doctor thinks the General's plan will destroy
the "spirit of the earth". Of course, since Sid is "good" and Hein is "evil",
Sid's plan is the one that works. The story of the movie is that of Aki seeking
out the remaining necessary lifeforms to construct the wave (and finding out
what the Phantoms really are...) vs. Hein trying to prove and implement the
effectiveness of his plan.)
