I've seen the anime and have read the manga through vol. 5. The
plot-correspondence is high but not exact. There's a brief overview of

I find it enjoyable since the manga does give different character
development, focuses more on Shinji, and in general seems to be more
upbeat...the interaction between Rei and Shinji in vol. 5 is great, for
example, and I don't recall it being explored in as much depth in the
series. I once knew of another site that went into far more detail on the
manga but haven't been able to locate it again.
