Re: "Coming out" about conlanging to people

I grew up in a blue collar family, and had two
siblings. It was a family joke that my little sister
was the Beauty, my little brother the Brawn, and
myself the Brain. So when I started conlanging at a
very early age, my parents just assumed it was
something that brainy people did.
Later on, my biological incubator (we don't get
along anymore, because I'm gay and pagan and an
abomination before the Lord), decided that making
languages was Satan's version of glossolalia, and I
wasn't allowed to do it. Of course, like all
teenagers, I found plenty of ways to conlang without
my mother ever knowing.
Like Yoon Ha, I also have a lot of gamer friends,
and a large number of pagan friends, so my conlangs
have always been seen as neat things. There are quite
a few Wiccans out there with craft names in one of my
conlangs (Acuro, the hawk, from a Latinate conlang,
for example). And lots, LOTS of rpg characters with
names in my conlangs (Yuras, the bear, from the same
conlang as above, as the name of a werebear cleric in
AD&D - we always called him Your-ass. His player
wasn't keen on the nickname! ;). In general, I'd say
I've had pretty good experiences (my mother is the
notable exception to just about everything in my
life).

   Aidan
