I'm with the others who say that conlangs don't have to have indirect
disourse if the conlanger doesn't want it.

H.S. Teoh could create a construction that signifies that the direct quote
is, for example, an inexact quote or a summary of a quote, by using
particles other than "ti...timi."

Alternatively, inexact quotation, or summary of a quotation, etc. could be
indicated by idiomatically.

The man said "I ran away." (exact quote)

The man went "I ran away." (inexact quote or summary of quote)

Other possibilities abound, but I had better go to sleep soon.

P.S. Thanks to all who responded to my questions! Even the 'I don't
know's' were helpful. (I thought I was the only one who didn't know the
answers. :-)
