Actually there are multitudes of languages in China, but I assume that you
mean the sinitic languages: Mandarin, Wu (which includes Shanghai dialect),
Minnan (which includes the dialects of Xiamen, Teochew and Taiwanese),
Minbei, Yue (Cantonese), Kejia (Hakka), Gan and Xiang. Then there are
various dialects of each of those which are more or less mutually
intelligible (eg. 3-4 major varieties of Mandarin in PRC, a ROC variety and
one in the former USSR).
