Well, this may not help you that much, but my one "root" of my conlang
(Rokbeigalmki) started as a phonetic English orthography invented by my
brother. A while after he made it, we tried to make a conlang by taking
those sounds and adding in sounds from other languages that we knew, like
Hebrew and Spanish. Then, when that conlang (ool-Nuziiferoi) was
abandoned, i transfered it's inventory of sounds almost exactly into my
new language.
Maybe you should try making strange sounds with your mouth, figuring out
how you're doing them, and keeping them if you like them. Just play with
your vocal tract a little!
