My take on a revised/modified X-SAMPA is at
<http://www.netg.se/~bp/bpj-sampa.html>. I too utilized some redundancies
in the original scheme to get "new" symbols, then shuffled values around a
bit. Prime goals were to abolish the use { and } as phonetic symbols, and
to introduce % for the front rounded half-close vowel. I also replaced the
backslash as a general modifier with ;, since the backslash is hard to type
on a Swedish keyboard, (and what's more it irritated my TeXnical aesthetics
:-). I would like to preserve * as a general stopgap character -- call me
an inveterate philologist!
