Back in pre-computer days, at an airline office in Spain, I once stood in line a very long time while while the agent on the phone laboriously spelled out the name of the English woman in front of me-- he used names of Span. cities to illustrate the letters: "be de Barcelona, ve de Valencia, ge de Gerona" etc. etc. It took forever, but I learned a bit of geography at least. When giving my middle initial F. over the phone, I have to specify it "as in Frank/Fred" to avoid confusion with S. The military of course have a whole alphabet-- alpha, bravo, Charlie, delta, echo...zebra (used to be able, baker, Charlie etc. I don't know why they changed it)-- useful, but not many civilians know it anymore.
