If you're going very high over the limit they can charge you with
reckless driving, which is a misdemeanor and can carry jail time. At
least in some states; state laws vary. It's often reduced to a fine
even if you are convicted of it, unless you've damaged something or
hurt someone. I knew a couple of guys in college who got them reduced
to civil infractions (wording? I think that's right) and fines. I don't
think jail time is a possibility with just a normal speeding ticket.
