Well, it's probably a matter of whichever one you're most used to. :-)

But, they're the same letters. It still seems odd to me to start off
with the form that's most different from what you see printed.

Well, I feel the same thing about your arguments. :-) Then again, your
language also has a huge difference between the written grammar and the
spoken grammar, so I guess it's not so strange that written and printed
writing should also be drastically different. ;-)
