For a few years after we were first taught cursive handwriting, we were
required to use it. But by the time we hit secondary school/high school,
nobody cared as long as it was legible. Computer printouts or typewritten
pages were preferred for anything that was done at home; in the classroom
we wrote with pencil or ballpoint pen. I personally used a sort of italic
script, which sort of splits the difference between traditional block letters
and cursive.
