What you say makes me wonder whether your knowledge of the
historical nature of German and French retroactively imposed that
on your original word.  Not that it's impossible or even
unlikely that what you say is incorrect, but that I think it might be
better explained by your recognition of a pattern which may not
have actually existed. :)
