Re: How French really should be spelled

I'm not terribly fond of the spelling, especially because
of the many different accents. I'd use something only as
unambiguous an necessary, and not too far away from the
original French aesthetics, e.g.:

 p t c b d g m n ny
/p t k b d g m n J /

 f s ch v z j r l
/f s S v z Z R l/

 y u ou oi
/j H w wa/

 i u ou
/i y u /

 é eu au
/e 2 o /

    e
   /@/

 è oe o
/E 9 O /

    a
   /a/

Having separate letters for /w/ and /H/ seems unnecessary,
since those only appear in combinations where their full
vowel value isn't an option... personally, I pronounce muet
as /myE/, but Le Robert insists on /mHE/... anyway, there
seems to be no phonemic distinction here. Oua is a bit long
for the common combination /wa/, so the traditional digraph
/oi/ could be kept.

Write /A~ E~ o~ wE~/ as an, un, on, oin. To write /n./, add
a schwa: gents -> jan, Jeanne -> Jane; un -> un, une -> une;
bon -> bon, bonne -> bone; moins -> moin, moine -> moine.
Schwas are mostly unpronounced in French anyway, so it's no
big deal. Alternately, the n could be doubled: Jann, minn,
bonn, but that would definitely look unFrench.

The /L/ has become /j/ in modern French, so no letter is
necessary.

You use z for both /z/ and /Z/... /twad@martinik/? ;-) -- Christian Thalmann
