Interesting, so there's no [o]? I like that diphthong [OU]

Depends. In SAMPA, it's [9] (I don't know why, it just is)

Interesting, so u' and u are, when "long", are homophonous? I wonder why the short form is [Y] and not [y]? Interesting.

Odd! It's not [9Y]? I wonder why [au] (I'm assuming that that's the original form) became [9I]? I can understand [a] --> [9], if it was [a], frontal. I could see [au] --> [9u] --> [9y] (raising and fronting of [a], and fronting of [u]), but the unrounding of [y] is just bizarre, especially since the [9] wasn't likewise unrounded to [E]. -- "It's bad manners to talk about ropes in the house of a man whose father was hanged." - Irish proverb http://members.tripod.com/~Nik_Taylor/X-Files http://members.tripod.com/~Nik_Taylor/Books.html ICQ: 18656696 AIM Screen-name: NikTailor
