That is exactly what I have gathered from the etymology description in the
OED's entry on _Nahuatl_ & scanning all the websearch material I have
gathered so far.
And yeah Xibalba is the Mayan Hades as depicted/described in the _Popol
Vuh_.
Evidentally the Tzotzil people didn't/do not care for the _Popol Vuh_
version of things.
They hero-worship Zotz _their_ Demon Bat God who is one of the Lords of
Xibalba.
And it is interesting to note that the Tzotzil people & related peoples all
live in Chiapas, Mexico... the centre of the Zapatista movement.
