I use a modified form of that essay (Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offences)
for auditions (comedic monologue). It always makes people who are listening
to it laugh (it turns out that half the time, the people I've auditioned for
weren't actually listening to the *words*, but to my delivery). I
especially like the part where he talks about Cooper wearing out "barrels
and barrels of moccasins" with the trick of having moccasined people
following in the tracks of their moccasined enemies (to escape detection).
