A Maltese example:
sieheb - friend
habib - friend
sieheb tends to be used to family members, but taking a very broad
definition of family - my cousin's husband's brother in law is close enough.
Close enought to get free beer from his bar, anyways :) Habib is also a bit
more formal in use.
