"mer" could be cognate with Quenya stem "mel" ("melon" friend,
"Melian" (and IMO "Melkor")).
It survived in slavonic languageas as "mil",
but in other branches was denasalized to "bhil" (greek "phil")
and then changed to "libh" (germ. "lieb").
