It's often been noted among the oddities of our English tongue that the
U.S. Postal Service delivers the mail, whereas the Royal Mail delivers the post.

"Electronic mail" is of course so named because it was devised by Americans;
the protocol used to collect it from the server is not unnaturally the
Post Office Protocol.  The verb "to post", meaning to send to a mailing list or
to Usenet, is different from these; I think it was meant to suggest nailing a
public notice to a lamp-post.
