The sf writer Cordwainer Smith, aka Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger,
aka Lin Ba Lo, described tone 2 thus: like a question spoken under the
pressure of amusement or alarm.
His Norstrilian is very, very close to 20th C. Australian English, but
there are are a few tonal lexical items: /spik2/, written "spiek", is
"to communicate telepathically", and /hi@2/, written "hier", is
"to receive telepathic communication".
