No idea on the Star Trek question, but apparently there was a quite serious
project ca -90 that sought for messages from aliens in the junk-DNA of
certain bacteria. Evidently, they didn't find anything ...

PS Is there no abbrev for "junk-DNA"? When we've got things like tRNA and
mRNA, why not jDNA?
PS OK, it's because vocalic "d" is unpronounceable ... ;-)
