I think you hit the problem there.  French schwas are **rounded** and often
realized the same as /ø/ -- e phoneme, honetically it is more like [oe]
(that ligature...) --, so in a way it is true to say that French doesn't
have the **English** schwa sound.

When I took French -- for three years and I still can't speak/write, though
I read haltingly -- the teacher had us pronounce unaccented _e_ exactly
like the Swedish _ö_, which is [ø].
