The latter, very likely. Incidentally I made a future-Swedish conlang where all Latinate words were turned into Germanic-style monosyllable roots. These words became _auti_ and _aut_ respectively. Actually _automat_ means 'vendor machine' in Swedish, so _aut_ referred to a food-chest of sorts, while an automaton would probably have been _autis_, -is being a slangy suffix denoting persons or things associated with the root sense. In Future Swedish it had became a general person-denoting suffix, e.g. _hnakis_ 'speaker'. /BP "Doubt grows with knowledge" -Goethe
