Hah...when I try to transcribe Cantonese, since I have no knowledge
of the tone numbers, I use the Chao tone numbers system (where pitch
is shown by numbers 1...5, eg 35 is mid rising, 53 is high alling
etc), which frankly means more to me than (possibly) arbitrary
numbers assigned to tones.
