The term may have originated as a derogatory reference to rural
Southerners, but as I can attest, there are plenty of rednecks
here in Illinois. 8P Nowadays, the term really is used more as
a reference to a supposed rural uncouthness, wherever that may
be found. (FWIW, one of my friends here is from rural NC, and
is one of the most educated people I have ever met -- one of the
few people I know with whom I can exchange allusions to, say,
Herodotos and not feel like I have to explain the background.)
