A lack of privacy? Not in that there is no such thing, but that they are
most comfortable in groups?
Are they vegetarians? I've only encountered one alien species that was a
vegetarian; among them, the herd instinct was much stronger to do defunct
evolutionary pressures.
A few books to check out with truly alien societies: "Celestis" by Paul
Park,
"Perdido Street Station" or "The Scar" by China Miéville, "Way of the
Pilgrim" by Gordon R. Dickson.
There are also a few human societies (both real and fictional) that are the
same way "The Book of the New Sun" by Gene Wolfe, any Japanese literature
set during the last part of the Meiji Restoration (or during the Tokugawa
Shogunate), Victorian or Middle Ages England.
I'm working on a conculture as well. It's difficult trying to think outside
of everything I've been taught, but that's one of the reasons I'm focusing
so hard on my conlang: language can greatly infuence thought patterns.
Anything else?
