Can't remember the date, but it was some two or three weeks ago I last heard it. I'm glad to say it hasn't disappeared here. It does vary from parish to parish, some are keener on it than others. [....]

Yes you do - you've just used it, or rather, them: 'altar boy' (or nowadays 'altar girl') is used by use. We also call them 'servers'.
