Tradition? Many older christian churches face
eastwards. Cetainly not all.
Anyway, the point was that the priest should be
every bit the worshipper and should face the same
direction as his fellows. The new direction puts
the priest very much in the place of Jesus,
facing the people.

Well, post V-II, anything goes. You get all these
round churches, churches without tabernacles,
practically without altars.
