East? Why east? The church I grew up going to has the tabernacle
pointing to the north; St Patrick's Cathedral (the main Catholic church
of the Archdiocese of Melbourne) faces north-east. Both of these
churches were constructed before Vatican II. The church my family
currently goes to faces south, and was constructed after Vatican II.
