The Tridentine Mass is the Order of Mass as standardised by the Council of
Trent (1545-1563). Before this, several variant "uses" of the Mass
existed, mainly according to local custom or the tradition of religious
orders. The standardisation was made partly in response to the challenges
of the reformation. The New Rite dates from the Second Vatican Council
(1962-1965) and is mainly celebrated in the vernacular. The vernacular
forms will all be translations from a standard Latin form, which can be
used in its own right. Some revisions of the Liturgy were made, for
example, the priest now faces the congregation instead of the wall. A
minority dislike these changes, and insist on the Tridentine Mass, even
though, as far as Catholic theories of authority go, the decisions Council
of the Church are about as authoritative as you can get.
