'gehe' doesn't have an [h] when I say it, but it doesn't have a glottal stop either, which is inserted by some Germans when imitating the FrenCH (thanks for the correction). I wonder why some people think of German as a harsh sounding language. As you say, it may be because of the [x], or because they haven't any real German, only imitations of Germans speaking English in some old war films. But anyway, I think the beauty of a language can only be judged by those who speak it, because it lies in it's words and their suptle meanings.
