Ah yes. It was already in use, and we hadn't been in VN all that long....so
probably of earlier origin. It was the cover term for most Asians, tho not
IIRC too often applied to the Japanese?? Sounds possibly Korean to me.
Somewhat along the same line, where does British _wog_ (anyone of dark
complexion) come from?
