I can remember this too, at about the age of 6 - 7. Kids of this age and
maybe a bit older started to say /iD@/ instead of 'aiD@/ much to my
consternation!
Another example along the same lines was "move" being pronounced /mu:v/
which I know is standard English, but the area I lived in had
a strong Norfolk bias, and 'everybody' pronounced this as /mouv/ as the
local accent still indeed does. I can distinctly recall feeling that these
examples
sounded 'American' - this was v.late 50's and "American" trends were all the
rage.
