OK, managed to get almost all of the details wrong.

1) It was part of the Feelspace experiment (http://feelspace.cogsci.uos.de)
2) it used a custom belt with a magnetic compass (not GPS) and
vibrators (no cell phones).
3) the north-pointing vibrator pad was vibrating *all the time*.
