I think that ys- > yz- before voiced consonants should be mandatory,
otherwise, there's the chance that ys- + bal- might become yspal-, with
forward assimilation (compare greek phleps < phleb-, vein + -s,
nominative singular), which could create ambiguity if there's another
root pal-.
