Yes it can!  I've seen it used before for sheep!  I remember seeing it in
Edith Hamilton's Mythology, where Ajax (I think) goes mad and slaughters a
herd of Greek sheep.  "...the poor cattle, slain to no purpose by his hand.=
.."
