INITIALLY! However, once you learn /;c/, then it's STORED as that, and
your brain automatically simply has to retrieve that from its memory
bank. It's especially true of less commonly used symbols. Say I need
to describe a closed central unrounded vowel. I don't know the SAMPA
for that, but I do know the IPA. I'd have to open up the website that
has ASCII IPA and look it up (which turns out to be /1/). On the other
hand, with CB system, I'd just think of the IPA symbol (barred i), and
write /-i/. Also, if I don't want people to have to look it up, I'd
have to specify that /1/ was (barred-i).
