INITIALLY! However, once you learn /;c/, then it's STORED as that, and your brain automatically simply has to retrieve that from its memory bank. It's especially true of less commonly used symbols. Say I need to describe a closed central unrounded vowel. I don't know the SAMPA for that, but I do know the IPA. I'd have to open up the website that has ASCII IPA and look it up (which turns out to be /1/). On the other hand, with CB system, I'd just think of the IPA symbol (barred i), and write /-i/. Also, if I don't want people to have to look it up, I'd have to specify that /1/ was (barred-i). -- Happy that Nation, - fortunate that age, whose history is not diverting -- Benjamin Franklin http://members.tripod.com/~Nik_Taylor/Conlang/W.html http://members.tripod.com/~Nik_Taylor/Books.html ICQ #: 18656696 AIM screen-name: NikTailor
