Although "can" ( = "be able to" ) usually comes out for me as just [kn],
so "i can shoot the can" is something like [ajkn Sut D@ ke@n]. I can't
think of any time when i would pronounce "can" (=be able) out fully....it
just sounds so weird.
Hmm...i just tried an experiment with my brother:
Brother: "you can't do that!" [ju: ke@n(t)du: D&t]
Me: "yes i can!" [jEsaj ke@n]
I guess "can" is one of those 'whishy-washy' words....
I use [e@] to describe it because that's what i saw in the IPA
transcription of the word "care" in my Spanish-English dictionary. I saw
[E@] somewhere else, but the vowel always sounded to me that it's too
high up to start with [E].
I think i just figured it out what it is exactly....it seems to be some
kind of [e] with the tongue a bit more back towards [@], but higher up
than it.
