i rather like having a spelling reform from a
non-rhotic accent. i once tried to write something in
shavian and got stuck as it didn't allow half my
phonemes. i had to approximate 'beer' /bI:/ to /bi@r/
or something . . . as for 'flower' /fl&:@/ . . . !
it also didn't make the distinction between the vowels
in 'know' /n@U/ or /nVU/ and 'goal' /gOUl~/, which in
my accent is phonemic ( /h@UlIi/=sacred,
/hOUlIi/=threadbare ).
i think the reform wouldseem particularly natural to
people in essex ( except of course people in essex
don't need to be able to spell in the first place ;')
), where /@/ tends to [i] naturally. horrible comes
out as /"hor\ibUw/, where /i/ falls somewhere between
cardinal [I] and [i].
