Certainly someone who's asking for forgiveness is asking to be forgiven, yesno?
I think it'd be really easy to go from  "forgiven + ness" to "forgiveness", just as
people nowadays don't ask for "iced tea" but rather "ice-tea" (or at least, very
often).
