You give too much credit to "your average ignorant person."
I find that those without an interest in languages and/or
writing systems have no clue when confronted with a non-
Latin script.
I used to work in a computer programming department of
a large corporation. When I would send something to a
network printer in Arabic or Hebrew or Greek, another
programmer would deliver it to me and say, Here's your
Esperanto (or Japanese or Russian or . . . ). They weren't
just trying to be funny. I remember one programmer handing
me a page of Hebrew and saying, "That's Arabic, isn't it?"
I think your script is Arabic-looking enough that it might fool
your average, intelligent educated person.
