I have Excel 2000 and also use it sometimes, but at least as far as *I* can tell you can't use regular expressions. Don't know about the recent version of Office ... uh ... 2003? 2005 maybe? I've changed to OpenOffice a year ago. OOO's Calc *has* searching with regexps.

Use cards. Other than that, I'd go with what Dana said and use some database. I'm currently making the effort to copy my txt-file based, unreversable Ayeri/English dictionary into a SQL database -- yes, I'm doing this every now and then for months already, but it takes a while to copy 1250+ words by hand, including making up example sentences out of thin air that explain or disambiguify the use of words if there's anything to note.
